Howard Kunreuther is recipient of the Shin Research Excellence Award for his work on public-private partnerships

PPI Faculty Affiliate Professor and co-director of the Wharton Risk Management Center Howard Kunreuther has received the 2015 Shin Research Excellence Award from the Geneva Association and the International Insurance Society (IIS) in recognition of his outstanding work on the role of public-private partnerships in mitigating and managing risks. 

Prof. Kunreuther will be presenting, “Insuring Against Extreme Events: The Need for Private-Public Partnerships” at the IIS’s 51st annual seminar June 14-17.   The research will be published in The Geneva Papers on Risk and Insurance. The Shin Research Excellence program was established to promote practical, applied research in the insurance and risk management fields.

As stated in the 2015 Shin Research Excellence Award Winners Announcement:

“The joint research program was established to promote practically oriented, applied research in the field of insurance and risk management, addressing topics which directly influence business operations. Under this program, research is commissioned from leading academics worldwide and refereed by a panel of distinguished judges, represented by insurance experts and industry scholars.”

“Howard Kunreuther has a long-standing interest in ways that society can better manage low-probability, high-consequence events related to technological and natural hazards. He is a distinguished professor, a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science and a Distinguished Fellow of the Society for Risk Analysis. Prof. Kunreuther has authored several books, countless research articles and reports, and has served on a number of intergovernmental panels relating to disaster risk, resiliency and climate change, including the World Economic Forum and the National Academy of Science / National Research Council’s panel on increasing National Resilience to Hazards and Disasters. His work is widely respected by policy makers, academic peers and the insurance industry at large. Prof. Kunreuther will be presenting original research on Insuring Against Extreme Events: The Need for Private-Public Partnerships, as commissioned by the IIS and the Geneva Association through the Shin Research program.”
