The Trump administration filed a brief arguing the unconstitutionality of ACA

May 02, 2019
Trump administration files brief calling for the end of the Affordable Care Act; CBO publishes new report on Medicare for All; Lawmakers feel pressure to fix loophole in 2017 tax law; Jobless claims unchanged from last week.

Policy Watch

    • Trump administration files brief calling for the end of the Affordable Care Act. The Trump administration filed a brief in federal appeals court on Wednesday arguing that the ACA is unconstitutional and should be struck down, abandoning a previous position where they argued that some portions of the law, including Medicaid expansion, should remain. 18 attorneys general from Republican-controlled states brought the case. [NYT]

    • CBO publishes new report on Medicare for All. The CBO published new analysis on the Democrat’s Medicare for All plan, indicating that the legislation would require additional government funding but could conserve costs by consolidating administrative tasks. The report also indicated that expanded coverage for more Americans would extend wait times and reduce access to care. [WSJ]

    • Lawmakers feel pressure to fix loophole in 2017 tax law. Lawmakers in the House and Senate have introduced bipartisan legislation to fix a drafting error in the 2017 tax law that allows business owners to write off costs over 39 years rather than just one year, as intended. Food lobbying groups have called for a fix to the legislation, but it is unclear if either legislative body will take action anytime soon. [The Hill]

      Economic Indicators & News

    • Jobless claims unchanged from last week. The number of Americans filing for unemployment was flat at 230,000 for the week ending April 27, the same as the week prior. The four-week moving average of claims increased again to 212,500, and economists underestimated jobless claims by 15,000. Unemployment is currently hovering at 3.8%, close to the Fed’s year-end 3.7% projected rate. [CNBC]
