Supreme Court agrees to hear case regarding census question

April 22, 2019
U.S. ends waivers for countries to import Iranian oil; Fight over census question will be heard in the Supreme Court; Trump administration’s proposed hiring requirement faces scrutiny; Existing U.S. home sales fall.

Policy Watch

  • U.S. ends waivers for countries to import Iranian oil. On Monday, the White House announced that the waivers allowing eight countries to continue buying Iranian oil despite U.S. sanctions will be discontinued. The move is part of an economic pressure campaign by the Trump administration against Iran to deprive the country of export revenue. The administration hopes that depriving Iran of these funds will stunt the country’s expansionist activities in the Middle East. However, despite the negative impact of these sanctions on the Iranian economy, Iran has not pulled back its military activity in the Middle East. [WSJ]

  • Fight over census question will be heard in the Supreme Court. On Tuesday, the court will hear arguments on the Trump administration’s effort to add a question about citizenship to the 2020 census. The Commerce Department, which administers the census, will argue in favor of adding the question. Supporters of the question believe that the department should be allowed to gather citizenship information and to use that information to help with the Justice Department’s enforcement of the Voting Rights Act. Opponents of the question will be represented by the state of New York. The state will claim that adding this question will deter undocumented immigrants from completing the census, leading to inaccurate population data. Justices will decide whether the decision to add this question was made arbitrarily without proper efforts to understand its impact. [The Hill]

  • Trump administration’s proposed hiring requirement faces scrutiny. In December, President Trump signed the First Step Act, a law that overhauls the criminal justice system by revising sentencing laws and expanding prisoner reentry and early release programs. At its signing, the law had widespread bipartisan support. However, a recently proposed update to hiring requirements has become the subject of controversy. Under the update, recipients of a job offer from the federal government or its contractors would be required to disclose whether they participated in a pretrial diversion program. These diversion programs tend to be offered to first-time offenders who are often charged with nonviolent crimes. This diversion disclosure could lead an agency to rescind a job offer. Economic Indicators and News

  • Existing U.S. home sales fall. In March, sales for existing homes fell 4.9% from February to a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 5.21 million units. All regions saw a decline in sales despite lower mortgage rates, sustained wage gains, and slower home price appreciation. [Bloomberg]
